Tree Ordinance Update

The City of Elk Grove is committed to protecting its healthy urban forest. The City was the first jurisdiction in the Sacramento area to join the regional Greenprint program and develop a partnership with the Sacramento Tree Foundation to double the area’s tree canopy over the next 40 years.

The City is now working to create a Tree Ordinance specifically tailored to Elk Grove. The ordinance will update the Tree Ordinance previously developed by the County of Sacramento and adopted by the City upon its incorporation in 2000.

At a public meeting on June 5, 2006, members of the public expressed their vision for an updated tree ordinance. Staff incorporated those requests into a proposed Tree Ordinance update. Members of the public shared their ideas on this draft ordinance at a subsequent meeting on February 12, 2007. Staff has taken these comments and is has revised the draft ordinance.

On July 11, 2008 the Planning Commission continued approval of the Tree Preservation Ordinance to a date uncertain. In an effort to address the concerns of the Public and the Planning Commission staff will continue to work on the Tree Ordinance update. Upon completion of the draft Ordinance a new public hearing will be noticed.
